Who we are & what we do

Shardlow and Great Wilne are villages within the district of South Derbyshire, approximately 6 miles southeast of Derby.

An important late 18th century river port for the trans-shipment of goods to and from the River Trent to the Trent & Mersey Canal. During its' heyday from the 1770s to the 1840s it was often referred to as "Rural Rotterdam" and "Little Liverpool". Today, Shardlow is considered Britain's most complete surviving example of a canal village, with over 50 Grade II Listed Buildings and a large number of surviving public houses within the designated Shardlow Wharf Conservation Area.

Shardlow and Great Wilne are also home to a village shop, a Primary School and lots of open spaces. We have a Village Hall offering various activities on a weekly basis, and is also available to hire.

The Parish Council:
Parish Councils are the first tier of local government and the closest to the community they serve. They are elected bodies with discretionary powers and rights to represent their communities and provide services for them. The number of councillors is fixed by the local District or Borough Council.

Shardlow & Great Wilne are served by 9 parish councillors and 1 clerk. The Clerk is a paid officer of the council and it is the Clerk's responsibility to action decisions made by the Parish Council.

Our committees have specific tasks and can have delegated powers. Shardlow & Great Wilne Parish Council currently has two committees:

• Finance - meet 4 times a year, July, November, January, March/April
• Village Hall and Recreation - Meet monthly
